The Nigerian Senate has appointed Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North, as the first Chairman of the Senate Committee for the newly formed South East Development Commission (SEDC).
The SEDC was established through legislation signed by President Bola Tinubu.
This announcement was made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a plenary session today, confirming Kalu’s previous position as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatisation.
In addition, Senator Ken Eze from Ebonyi Central has been appointed as the Vice Chairman of the committee, with Akpabio indicating that more committee members will be revealed shortly.
In this new role, Kalu, who has previously directed the ad hoc screening committee for the North West and South East development commissions, will manage the SEDC’s functions. The commission aims to address issues such as civil restitution, erosion control, security enhancement, and infrastructure development.
The Senate has also approved the board members of the SEDC following a report submitted by Senator Kalu. The 18-member board is headed by Dr. Emeka Nworgu as Chairman, while Hon. Mark Okoye takes on the role of Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.
Additional confirmed board members are Ugochukwu H. Agballah, Hon. Okey Izenwa, Chief Hyacinth Ikpor, Chidi Echeazu, Ifeanyi Agwu, Nasiru Usman, Hamma Adama Ali, Kumo Edward David Onoja, and Orure Kufre Inima.
The board also consists of Daniel Akwari, Chief (Mrs.) Joke Adebayo-Chukwuma, Hon. Stanley Ohajuruka (E.D. Finance), Chief Sylvester Okonkwo (E.D. Corporate Services), and Hon. Toby Okechukwu (E.D. Projects).
Lastly, Senator Anthony Agbo serves as E.D. for Commercial and Industrial Development, along with Dr. Clifford Ogbede as E.D. for Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Rural Development.
