Thulani Foshini Sikhundla, a 40-year-old man, has received two life sentences plus an additional five years from the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court in South Africa. His conviction stems from the brutal murders of his girlfriend, Dorris Alina Sibiya, and her daughter, Noxolo Simile Khoza.
The incident occurred on April 2, 2024, during a visit to Sibiya’s home, where an argument concerning infidelity escalated into violence. Sikhundla first attacked Noxolo in her bedroom before turning on Sibiya, stabbing her numerous times.
Sibiya’s teenage son tried to intervene after hearing the commotion but was able to escape without injury, even though Sikhundla attempted to assault him. Following the attack, Sikhundla fled into nearby mountains, leaving both victims deceased at the scene.
Throughout the extensive trial, Sikhundla maintained his innocence and exhibited no signs of guilt. The prosecution, led by Senior State Advocate Ashwin Poodhun, presented substantial evidence, including eyewitness testimonies and forensic details that illustrated the gruesome nature of the attacks, including disturbing images and postmortem findings confirming deaths from multiple stab wounds.
Advocate Poodhun pressed for a harsh sentence, emphasizing that Sikhundla’s actions were grossly misaligned with community values regarding the protection of women. A victim impact statement prepared by Court Preparation Officer Nomfundo Mokoena highlighted the enduring emotional and financial distress faced by the family as a result of these events.
Judge Sheila Msibi ruled that there were no valid reasons to deviate from the mandatory sentencing guidelines, consequently imposing two life sentences for the double murder and an extra five years for attempted murder.
“The sentence highlights the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) dedication to championing the rights and safety of victims within our communities, and sends a clear warning to potential offenders that acts of violence will face serious repercussions,” said the NPA.
