President Bola Tinubu officially launched three vessels for the Nigerian Navy—NNS SHERE, NNS FARO, and NNS IKOGOSI—along with three AW109 Trekker helicopters, designated as 501, 502, and 503, enhancing the naval fleet.

During the ceremony held in Lagos on Saturday, Tinubu emphasized that these new Fast Patrol Boats and maritime surveillance helicopters signify Nigeria’s dedication to safeguarding its waters.

The Minister of State for Defence, Mr. Bello Matawalle, represented the president at the event.

“The ocean has been a cornerstone of our nation’s economic growth, and for nearly seven decades, the Nigerian Navy has been the protector of these waters.

“These ships and helicopters serve as crucial assets in our campaign against piracy, oil theft, illegal fishing, and other maritime offenses.

“This inauguration showcases our resolve to empower our institutions and safeguard our resources,” he stated.

Tinubu assured the Navy of his administration’s commitment to address its requirements, stating, “A robust navy is fundamental to a secure and thriving economy.”

He lauded Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff, for his effective leadership in driving the modernization of the Navy’s fleet, closing capability gaps, and restoring pride within the ranks.

“Today’s addition is a testament to your strategic visions, and I commend you, your team, and all partners who brought this goal to fruition.

“I also express my gratitude to the National Assembly for its bipartisan support in funding and oversight, which were vital to this achievement.

“We must maintain this unified effort, as our maritime domain does not recognize political divides; it calls for our collective responsibility,” the president remarked.

Tinubu also recognized international partners and allies for their collaboration, reiterating the notion that maritime security is a shared global responsibility.

“Together, we demonstrate that the safety of the Gulf of Guinea is not solely Nigeria’s task, but a crucial global concern.

“To the officers and personnel who will operate these ships and helicopters, bear in mind that the aspirations of Nigeria lie heavily on your shoulders.

“Let us dream of a future they represent: one where our waters are free from crime; where fishermen can work without fear; where international trade flows smoothly through our ports,” he added.

The president stated that the Nigerian Navy is vital to the blue economy and urged them to move forward with fortitude, knowing a grateful nation supports them.
