The Interim National Coordinator of the Obedient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, expressed his endorsement for the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, regarding a potential single term as stipulated by a coalition agreement.
Tanko made these comments during an interview on Arise Television.
He emphasized that Peter Obi is committed to upholding any agreements made sincerely.
He stated, “Integrity is key. If we agree on a one-term presidency, that will be our commitment, and he will honor it. Obi is a man who stands by his promises made in good faith.”
Furthermore, Tanko defended Obi’s recent assertion that he would bring stability to Nigeria within two years of taking office, pointing to Obi’s trip to Egypt to study their power solutions as a testament to his dedication to finding effective approaches.
He said, “In his first term in Anambra, he effectively united the populace and resolved governance issues, which is not merely talk.”
“If he can tackle the electricity crisis in Nigeria, it would profoundly transform the nation. The potential for small businesses to flourish is beyond measure.”
Tanko noted that Peter Obi’s likability is growing nationwide, highlighting his increasing recognition in Northern regions.
He remarked, “Recently, traditional leaders from the Emirate Council honored him with an award, indicating growing acceptance. People across diverse backgrounds—be it Hausa, Fulani, Muslims, or Christians—are embracing him. We seek a unifier.”
Additionally, Tanko dismissed claims of ongoing discussions between Peter Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar regarding a potential joint ticket for the 2027 elections, stating, “That conversation hasn’t even been initiated. Speculation exists, but no such discussions are occurring.”
As the leader of the grassroots movement supporting Peter Obi, Tanko stated their main objective is to forge a broad coalition focused on integrity, inclusiveness, and dedication to the Nigerian populace.
He confirmed that they are in talks with like-minded individuals and political factions, asserting that any alliance must prioritize the public interest rather than elite political interests.
According to him, Peter Obi aims to build a coalition centered on competence and capability, moving away from ethnic or religious affiliations, noting that the approach will be distinctly non-traditional.
He concluded, “We are already in discussions about unifying diverse forces. It’s not solely about Peter Obi and the Labour Party; it’s fundamentally about Nigeria and our mission to rejuvenate the country.”
