It is widely acknowledged that Arsenal urgently requires a talented striker as the summer transfer window approaches. Their goal tally falls 17 short compared to league leaders Liverpool this season.
Mikel Arteta is convinced that acquiring a goal-scoring forward is essential. The Gunners have compiled a list of potential candidates, but Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP has been their top choice for several months.
The 26-year-old has displayed exceptional goal-scoring ability with Sporting, leading them to a domestic double in his second season in Portugal. He netted a vital goal during Sporting’s 3-1 victory over rivals Benfica in the Taca de Portugal final recently.
Before that match, Gyokeres shared a photo on Instagram in his Sporting gear with an enthusiastic two-word caption: “Let’s go,” accompanied by a lion emoji.
Although he has often been linked to moves away from Portugal over the last couple of seasons, he has respected his contract with Sporting. However, with this recent domestic success, many speculate his time in Lisbon might be coming to a close.
The Swedish international has an impressive record of 95 goals from just 100 matches for Sporting since his arrival in July 2023 from Coventry City. If he departs Sporting, he will do so as a club icon, finishing this season with 39 goals and seven assists in 33 Liga Portugal matches, totaling 54 goals across all competitions.
What are Gyokeres’s thoughts on his future?
Gyokeres maintained his scoring streak in the Taca de Portugal final, converting a pivotal equalizer from the penalty spot in the 11th minute of added time, pushing the match into extra time where they ultimately secured the title against Benfica.

Post-match, when questioned about his future, he kept his comments vague, stating, “Let us wait and see. It’s tough to predict because in football, you never know what may happen during the summer. So it’s hard for me to say anything beyond that,” he informed reporters.
Regarding the speculation connecting him to Arsenal, Gyokeres noted, “I’m not sure; my focus is on the present. I’ve been concentrating on the recent games due to their importance and prefer not to think about anything else. So if there’s any truth to it, we’ll see in summer.”
According to Mirror, Arsenal holds the lead in the race for the Swedish forward, provided they are prepared to meet Sporting’s £60 million price tag. The Gunners would also need to offer a significant £200,000-a-week salary to secure his services.
Manchester United also has their sights set on the 26-year-old, but with the absence of Champions League football next season, it seems unlikely that Gyokeres would choose them over other options.
