Newcastle Targets Ligue 1 Star Following Champions League Win

Newcastle United plot move for Ligue 1 goal machine after Champions League qualification image

Newcastle United is on the hunt for a forward and has reportedly spotted a candidate as they prepare for their UEFA Champions League return.

As reported by L’Equipe, Eddie Howe’s team is focusing on Stade Rennais striker, Arnaud Kalimuendo, who has been impressive in Ligue 1.

The 23-year-old French forward joined Rennais in 2022 from PSG and has quickly become a top target for Howe after a standout season in Ligue 1, where he scored 17 goals and provided 3 assists in 33 matches.

His performance statistics are noteworthy. As indicated by FBref, Kalimuendo exceeded his expected goals tally (xG 14.9), demonstrating his clinical nature in front of the net.

Insiders indicate that Newcastle and Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen have made early inquiries regarding the forward, though no official offers have been made by either club so far.

According to these sources, Newcastle is ready to present a significant financial proposal to outpace the German club in securing his services.

Kalimuendo has a contract with Rennes that runs until 2027, yet his position is precarious, especially after nearly departing last summer. With Eddie Howe’s team looking to bolster their attacking options, particularly as Callum Wilson’s contract expires this June and Alexander Isak is being pursued by several top European teams—Kalimuendo seems to be in line for a potential transfer to Tyneside.

His impressive metrics in progressive play (2.51 progressive passes and 1.75 carries on average per 90 minutes, according to Fbref) further enhance his attractiveness. At just 23 years old and the prospect of Champions League football ahead, this could be the perfect moment for a transition.

This comes during a significant Premier League season for Newcastle, with a return to Champions League action secured on the final matchday, boosted by Aston Villa’s loss at Old Trafford.

Newcastle enters transfer race for Brazilian forward alongside Liverpool

Both Liverpool and Newcastle are showing interest in Brighton striker Joao Pedro, as reported by talkSPORT.

The Brazilian is open to a new opportunity, however, Brighton is not keen on selling him at a low price after investing £30m [$40m]. Now, the Seagulls are reportedly valuing him at £100m[$135m], and despite a relatively modest tally of 10 goals and 6 assists this season, Pedro remains one of their most valuable players.
