Newcastle’s Transfer Woes as Arsenal Eyes Key Premier League Target

Newcastle United faces a setback as Arsenal has entered the competition for Marc Guehi, the captain of Crystal Palace.

This England defender recently celebrated an FA Cup victory with his team and is now in the final year of his contract, attracting interest from leading Premier League teams.

Reports from Football Insider in February indicated that Arsenal and Liverpool have joined Newcastle in seeking Guehi.

As highlighted by Arsenal True Fans, “Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal manager, is considering bringing in a new central defender this summer to bolster his established starting pair of Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba.”

Some reports suggest that Guehi is eager for Champions League action but is also looking for consistent first-team opportunities to secure his role under Gareth Southgate for the 2026 World Cup.

From a financial standpoint, Guehi appears to now be a more viable target for Premier League clubs.

Football Transfers reported, “Arsenal sees Guehi as a relatively budget-friendly option since he has only one year left on his contract with Crystal Palace. He has not indicated any desire to extend his stay at Selhurst Park.”

His asking price has reportedly decreased from £70 million to an estimated £40-45 million, according to The Express.

Intense competition for Guehi as top clubs express interest

Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke stated that there is currently no clear frontrunner for Guehi, emphasizing the growing competition.

“At the moment, I wouldn’t say any club is a clear favorite for him. It’s a competitive field,” O’Rourke remarked during a podcast on Football Insider.

“Newcastle has long admired him… and Arsenal has shown interest as well.”

While Liverpool has shown previous interest, their attention has shifted to other needs. Ultimately, the key might rest on Guehi’s future plans.

“Should he choose Arsenal, there’s no assurance he would secure a starting role,” O’Rourke added.

This consideration is significant for a player who dreams of participating in the World Cup. Additionally, both Arsenal and Newcastle can offer Champions League appearances, a vital factor in attracting the Palace star.

“The decision may hinge on the offers made, as the player will take his time in deciding,” said O’Rourke.

Crystal Palace is already on the lookout for potential replacements, knowing Guehi’s departure could be imminent. His move might be finalized before preseason if an appealing offer is made.
