Why Meghan McCain Wore a Marchesa Wedding Gown Despite the Harvey Weinstein Scandal

She said yes to the dress and nothing was going to change her mind — even one of the biggest scandals of the year.

Meghan McCain, The View co-host and daughter of Sen. John McCain, married conservative pundit Ben Domenech last week wearing her dream Marchesa wedding dress. And even though the brand got wrapped up in the Harvey Weinstein sexual assault scandal a month before the wedding (co-designer Georgina Chapman was married to the disgraced movie mogul for 10 years), McCain maintains that dropping the designer never even crossed her mind.

“The scandal erupted and everybody was like, are you going to keep the dress? And I was like why should the two women designers be punished for a man’s disgusting behavior,” McCain tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I just didn’t wanna feel like the people who had worked there and make their livelihood should be punished as well.”

She had picked out her dress well before the scandal made headlines, saying she’s been a fan of the brand for years because they design for her body type. “I’m not a skinny girl and they make dresses for women with bodies and I so appreciate that.”

McCain worked with co-designer Keren Craig at her fittings saying she is a “lovely person” and that the brand made it “very easy for me.”

“I love my dress,” McCain says. “It’s beaded and lace and light pink because I didn’t want to wear white. It’s very non traditional, rose, light pink. I think the wedding gods aligned because the dress was very easy. It was a very easy choice. It’s like a 1930s look. Vintage looking like ’20s, ’30s; it looks like it could have been my grandmother’s but its not.”

She adds: “And it’s really comfortable too which I appreciate. Weddings are long and you don’t wanna be uncomfortable the whole time.”

A rep for Marchesa told PEOPLE, “It was such an honor for us to dress Meghan for one of the most memorable moments of her life. Meghan looked absolutely stunning in her ivory and blush fit-and-flare gown which was incredibly romantic for her special day.”

Throughout her entire wedding planning process she says she wasn’t “caught up” in all the details. “Even my dress, it was the second or third one I tried on, and my friend Lauren who is my stylist said we need to keep trying more and I was like, ‘No. I want to go get onion rings for lunch and we’re done. I’m fine.'”

Her quick-decision making was a hit. “The dress was absolutely beautiful and it was great to see her glowing as brides do,” her new husband says. “It was the culmination of a lot for both of us, in terms of our lives.”

As for Domenech, he wore a navy blue suit with matching tie and his shiny gold wedding band was engraved with a special saying the couple often tell one another. “Our thing we say to each other all the time is ‘ride or die’ which is a biker term but there’s something to it,” McCain explains. “I really said it during my dads treatment. We would text each other all the time [writing], ‘you’re my ride or die,’ so inscribed in his ring is ‘ride or die.'”

As for McCain’s ring, it’s a diamond band that her mother, Cindy McCain, helped design. Meghan says Domenech didn’t have a ring when he proposed. “My mom hooked him up later,” Meghan says. “I told him my mom has impeccable taste. Go with what she says. My mom has really been amazing through all of this. So helpful and helpful with the wedding. It’s been so nice.”

Cindy says seeing her husband walk Meghan down the aisle was “very special.”

“And you know one day this is probably going to happen to your child and then when it does, I watched this beautiful woman coming around in her wedding gown and what I remembered was this same woman as a little girl running around with her brothers in that same area when she was little,” Cindy says. “So it was for me, that was this place means to us. I saw a little girl coming up the aisle. That’s what I saw.”
