Before You Get Mad About Fantastic Beasts Characters Apparating in Hogwarts, Read This

The following contains spoilers for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

If you're into the same type of light reading that Hermione Granger enjoys in her free time, then you probably know from Hogwarts: A History that apparation within Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry simply isn't done. There are exceptions, of course, such as during Ministry-sanctioned apparating classes, or if you're the headmaster — but generally, apparating at Hogwarts is not only disallowed, it's also impossible thanks to an antiapparation charm.

So when the trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald dropped, fans were understandably outraged when the opening scene shows several wizards and witches apparating directly onto the castle's front entryway to interview then-Transfiguration professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law).

But is the outrage warranted? We know that Fantastic Beasts 2 takes place in 1927, and up until now fans have only experienced Hogwarts school through the eyes of Harry Potter and his companions. Canonically, we also know that Hogwarts: A History was written by Bathilda Bagshot sometime before 1984 — but considering her age in the Harry Potter series, it was likely written after 1927. So there's no reason why the apparating in Fantastic Beasts should be incorrect. The antiapparation charm might simply have been cast over the school sometime between 1927 and Hogwarts: A History's publication. In fact, it may not have been cast until Albus Dumbledore took up the helm of headmaster!

The history of Hogwarts' apparation rule is murky, but we're sure to learn more by watching Fantastic Beasts in November. Considering the fact that the film centers around Gellert Grindelwald's horrific crimes, the rules might even be a response to some specific event in the film; a preventative measure against dark magicians entering the school undetected. He's often portrayed as the first "big bad" in the wizarding world, so Hogwarts may never have required such protections in a pre-Grindelwald society.
