8 Questions We Need the Roseanne Reboot to Answer

When any show comes back, fans of the original are going to have questions. Are Will & Grace's kids still married? Who's the Simon Cowell of the new American Idol judging panel? What happened to Audrey on Twin Peaks?

The revival of Roseanne is no different. There are a lot of questions we need answered, but first and foremost, what the show is going to do about the way the original series ended. Read on to find out what the most burning questions are, what answers we may already have, and what we need from the revival.

How will the series finale be explained?

The final season of Roseanne is a weird one. It's revealed in the two-part finale that Roseanne has been writing her life as a book — that in fact the entire show has been her book version of her real family. So Roseanne reveals that she took creative license with a few things, like that she thought Darlene belonged with David, but Darlene was actually with Mark, and same for Becky — Becky was actually with David.

Also, her mom is not gay (her sister Jackie is), her son DJ goes to college, Becky and Mark are expecting a baby, and Dan really does die of a heart attack at Darlene's wedding.

It was quite the unusual way to end a series. So, what about all that when the series returns? Well, the short answer is that the writers are basically ignoring season nine, even though the creators won't come out and say that in such blunt terms.

What happened to Darlene and David?

The show establishes that Darlene and David have two kids together, but details are scarce about anything else. How long were they married? When and why did they get divorced? Where does David live?

Actor Johnny Galecki is obviously a bit busy on a little CBS show called The Big Bang Theory, so he can't be there for the entire revival, but he will appear on one episode, so hopefully that will clear some things up about Darlene and David.

What happened to Becky and Mark?

What happened to Becky and Mark?

When the revival picks up, Becky is a widow. The producers told us they wanted to make that choice to honor Glenn Quinn's memory; the actor who played Mark on the original series died in 2002.

But will we get more details about what exactly happened to him? And what about the fact that they were expecting a baby in the series finale? That's probably going to be one of those season nine things that the new show ignores.

How are they involving both actresses who played Becky?

How are they involving both actresses who played Becky?

The role of Becky was played by Lecy Goranson for seasons one through five, then seasons eight and 10. Sarah Chalke played the role for seasons six, seven, and nine. The switch was due to Goranson attending college and then she was able to come back later on in the series. So, how are they both involved in the revival?

Well, OG Becky is still Becky — Goranson is playing the eldest Conner child. Chalke is playing a woman who hires Becky to be her surrogate and there are some delightful winks at the fact that they once played the same character on the show.

Who are the new kids?

Who are the new kids?

There's a new generation in the Conner house in the form of three young people: Emma Kenney as Darlene and David's daughter, Harris; Ames McNamara as Harris' younger brother, Mark; and Jayden Rey as DJ's daughter, Mary.

Mary's mother is off-screen serving in the military when the show picks up, but the show's creators did reveal that her mother is Geena, who was featured in the season seven episode "White Men Can't Kiss." In that episode, D.J. is uncomfortable having to kiss a black girl in the school play. The storyline let the show tackle some serious issues of racism and prejudice . . . and it turns out DJ and Geena ended up getting married. Mary is their daughter.

What happened to Roseanne and Dan's fourth kid?

What happened to Roseanne and Dan's fourth kid?

If you'll recall, in the season eight Halloween episode, Roseanne gives birth to her and Dan's fourth child, Jerry Garcia Conner. He would now be 22 years old, but he is not part of the revival (yet). He is currently working on a fishing boat in Alaska, per the creators at the 2018 Winter TCA panel.

Will there be more episodes of the revival?
ABC

Will there be more episodes of the revival?

As of now, the reboot is nine episodes, airing in the Spring on ABC. Nothing has been decided beyond that, but the cast and creators are definitely up for some more.

"We had so many stories to tell over the arc of these nine episodes that we were hoping for another season to bring more clarity to [all the] characters," said Roseanne Barr, of things they couldn't get to during this initial run.

If so, will there be a Halloween episode?
ABC

If so, will there be a Halloween episode?

There's no word yet on even a second season, let alone plot points, but no show has ever done Halloween as well as Roseanne did, so we are guessing if there is a season two for the revival, and if they can air it in the Fall, they will include a Halloween episode. It would be a crime not to.
