      Critics Consensus

The Firm is a big studio thriller that amusingly tears apart the last of 1980s boardroom culture and the false securities it represented.

Audience Member My favorite Sidney Pollack film, and one of my favorites from Tom Cruise. The Firm is a smart, suspenseful ride, with no lulls, and is filled with on point performances from several of Hollywood's best, including Holly Hunter and Gene Hackman. Also of note is its musical score. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/24 Full Review Jacob B A worthy adaptation of its source material, The Firm just might be the best John Grisham film I've seen. It's certainly a helluva lot better than The Pelican Brief, which came out the same year. The acting is great, it's suspenseful, it's paced so well that the 2.5-hour-long runtime will just fly by, the score does a good job of setting the mood in each scene without being melodramatic and it remains faithful to the spirit of the book whilst making changes that are for the better, such as our hero being much more sympathetic rather than just being the guy we root for simply because the antagonists are worse than his corrupt ass. A compelling legal thriller that's sure to be a treat for Grisham fans and non-fans alike. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/12/24 Full Review Tom C This is a very entertaining thriller movie with some great writing and excellent performances from Tom Cruise, Gene Hackman and Jeanne Tripplehorn. This movie has a solid premise with some really good execution. It's smart, sleek, mysterious and provides the audience with some fantastic edge-of-your-seat thrills. The first half is very entertaining. It's a drama that's filled with intrigue and sets up a solid mystery. The second half sort of shifts genre by becoming a suspenseful crime thriller. It's a very entertaining movie. The acting is really good and one of the movie's strong points. Tom Cruise was still making dramas at this point in time and delivers an incredible performance. Gene Hackman is a veteran actor who delivers a fantastic performance as is expected from him. Jeanne Tripplehorn is good. Holly Hunter is only on screen for a couple of minutes but was nominated for an Oscar and gives a very good performance. Ed Harris plays his role with an urgency that's really good. David Strathairn is really good in his minor role. And there's a really good surprise performance from Gary Busey. Overall, this is a really suspenseful mystery thriller with some excellent performances that I'd recommend to anyone. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/20/24 Full Review David H God i wish they'd still make movies like this. Great story (based on a John Grisham novel). Great acting. Great noir esque score. A tense, suspenseful law/lawyer type thriller. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/12/24 Full Review Mitch C My favorite of the legal dramas. Superb cast. Tom Cruise is serviceable as always, but elevated by the likes of Gene Hackman (who, as usual almost steals the show with his performance,) Jeanne Triplehorn, Holly Hunter, Hal Holbrook just to name a few.. Wilford Brimley plays a great "bad guy." Some might try to see the movie as a social commentary on 90s era "yuppie-dum". I just think it's darn good entertainment. And the city of Memphis never looked so good. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/26/23 Full Review Hayley M I enjoyed this story line and was engaged for the whole movie, such a shame Tom Cruise is such an egomaniac !
