MAX EVRY’S RECOMMEND: Mondo Masters of the Universe Figures

One of the great things about Mondo as a company is they are FAN FOCUSED. So when they started delving into Masters of the Universe figures, I was intrigued. As a child of the 80’s I was obsessed with the Mattel action figures and the Filmation cartoon, but when I went back to look at those cartoons and toys as an adult I wasn’t nearly as impressed. Then I got a couple of the Mondo 1:6 scale figures in the mail. The Mondo MOTU line seems to be all about recapturing what the figures felt like in my mind as a child, embellishing them with a heightened level of detail while still retaining the colorful, fun and playful appeal they had way back when. Right now the Mer-Man and Faker figures are still available, and I will be unboxing them for the site very shortly, but it’s hard to describe how delightful they were upon opening the box!

KYLIE HEMMERT’S RECOMMEND: Final Fantasy VII Remake

I know I recently shared my review for Square Enix’s reimagining of the classic Final Fantasy VII game, but I thought now would be a good time to remind gamers who have yet to dive into Final Fantasy VII Remake that the title is an absolute must-play for action RPG fans! The visually striking homage to the 1997 title vastly expands upon the original story, showcasing how the developers painstakingly explored a fresh take on the classic. The game is the first of its own series, and developers have said they are already working on Part 2. Like most Final Fantasy games, Final Fantasy VII Remake is a stand-alone story, meaning you can jump right in and play even if you’ve never played any other Final Fantasy title. Fun and addicting, the game was released at the perfect time, offering a new world to escape into during a time where we could all use a little distraction from reality.

GRANT HERMANNS’ RECOMMEND: This Book is Full of Spiders: Seriously Dude, Don’t Touch It by David Wong

For those who fell in love with my recommendation last week, it’s time to continue your dive into the bizarre and hilarious world of John Cheese and David Wong with the stellar novel sequel This Book is Full of Spiders: Seriously Dude, Don’t Touch It (Yes that’s the title. No, don’t follow its instructions). The story continues as the Soy Sauce users come up against one of the most challenging cases yet as their undisclosed Midwestern town is hit by an epidemic of invisible, parasitic spiders that may or may not turn the infected into violent monsters that can only be described “like Optimus Prime made of meat.” While you might not think an epidemic-based story is good for these crazy times, just remember it’s not, but is instead a tale of two stoners having to face off against Lovecraftian invisible spiders wreaking havoc on this totally real town. Wong once again finds a way to blend the horror genre with stellar comedy and further develops his characters, namely that of Amy, who becomes equally as fascinating as the series’ leading duo. Sadly, no film adaptation has been made for this story, but there’s no harm in going back and giving the 2012 film a second watch (Or millionth in my case).

MAGGIE DELA PAZ’S RECOMMEND: Heart and Souls

Starring Academy Award nominee and MCU alum Robert Downey Jr., Heart and Souls is a fantasy comedy-drama film the follows the story of a 30-something businessman named Thomas Reilly, who is guarded by four different souls that have been attached to him ever since he was a baby. As a child, he was able to see and communicate with them which resulted to him forming a strong bond with his four guardian angels. However, Thomas’ parents were getting worried and disturbed by his obsession with his “imaginary friends” that they’ve considered getting him a psychiatric treatment. Because of this, the four souls consisting of Penny, Julia, Harrison, and Milo have decided to never communicate with Thomas and become invisible to him in order to allow him to have a normal life. After 34 years later, his guardian angels were forced to make themselves visible to him again, turning his perfect life upside down. Now, he must quickly help each of them fulfill their individual unfinished business before the bus to the afterlife comes and gets them.

This 1993 film was probably my first introduction to Robert Downey Jr. as I’ve got to watched this on an HBO rerun when I was in middle school. Since then, it became one of my favorite feel-good movies to re-watch because in addition to its heartwarming and quirky story, it also features a stellar cast alongside Downey Jr. including acclaimed actress Alfre Woodard, Kyra Sedgwick, Charles Grodin, Tom Sizemore and Elisabeth Shue. So, if you want something to watch on a bad day or if you’re a fan of the 1963 song “Walk Like a Man” by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, I highly-recommend you to check out Heart and Souls and give this underrated 90s classic a chance.

JEFF AMES’ RECOMMEND: Heat

Movies don’t get much better than Michael Mann’s classic Heat. Part crime drama, part action thriller, part complex character study, Heat is what The Dark Knight would look like if you removed Batman’s mask and Joker’s makeup — indeed, Christopher Nolan based the look of his classic comic book flick on Mann’s aesthetic — and applied an on-point Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro and mixed in a huge dose of in-his-prime Val Kilmer.

With a sprawling supporting cast that includes Ashley Judd, Jon Voight, Tom Sizemore, Diane Venora, Natalie Portman, William Fichtner, and Amy Brenneman, and one of the greatest shoot outs ever put to film, Heat somehow remains an underrated classic in desperate need of a revival.
