Watched at Home: Top 20 Streaming Films of the Week

Another week in quarantine has flown by, folks! Which means it’s time to check out the Top 20 Streaming Films for Week of April 18 that you, the couch potato crowd, binged during this extended shutdown (via Digital Entertainment Group).

That film everyone hated, J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, retains the title as the most streamed movie of the week and will likely stay atop for the next six months since there’s really no other big release set up to knock it down in the near future. Bad Boys for Life jumped from fourth to second, overtaking Sonic the Hedgehog and Dolittle, which round out the top four. I’m still baffled by Dolittle’s popularity, but at least Cats has vanished from the Top 20, which proves there is some hope for humanity. (I jest. But, seriously. Come on, people!)

Jumanji: The Next Level and The Call of Wild remain in their respective positions at No. 5 and No. 6., which somehow suits both of those films. Making a big jump from No. 13 to No. 7 is Guy Ritchie’s terrific The Gentlemen. Also moving up is James Mangold’s equally great Ford v Ferrari, which, if you haven’t already, deserves your attention (turn it up real loud on the home theater).

Another hidden gem leaping into the Top 20 is WB’s Just Mercy, starring Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx. The film faired well with critics, but failed to capture audiences and was shut out by the Academy Awards despite some strong performances from its two leads. Nice to see it getting some love on the streaming circuit.

Did the world entire suddenly shout, “Expecto patronum,” because the complete 8-film Harry Potter collection also magically appeared on the list. No judgement here. We’ve binged the entire saga over the last month as well in my house. (We’re huge nerds.) Ok, can we now start a movement to get The Lord of the Rings trilogy some good streaming play? That’s a terrific series to binge since we are all of us turning into Gollums. Hats off if you’ve already referred to your PS4 controller as “my precious!”

Finally, Disney and Pixar’s Onward continues to nosedive, which I find … odd. I really enjoyed the film and thought it would play great with families. I mean, it’s doing well, but the mere fact people are streaming Dolittle more just doesn’t seem appropriate.
