EXCLUSIVE: Rhys Darby Offers an Update on We’re Wolves

It’s been a long six years since Taika Waititi’s acclaimed indie horror comedy What We Do in the Shadows hit the big screen and introduced audiences to the world of New Zealand’s monsters, and talks have languished for years of a possible spin-off focusing on Rhys Darby’s pack of werewolves entitled We’re Wolves. While talking with ComingSoon.net, Darby gave us a brief, and disappointing, update on the long-awaited follow-up.

While talking with the 45-year-old New Zealand star for Jumanji: The Next Level, Darby revealed that due to co-writers/directors Waititi (Thor: Love and Thunder) and Jemaine Clement (Legion)’s busy schedules the project has been indefinitely shelved, but that he has not given up on the possibility.

I text Taika like once or twice a year asking, ‘What’s happening with We’re Wolves? When are we doing it?’ Unfortunately they’re both just super busy, so there’s been no real movement on the movie.

Waititi has been busy crafting the Oscar-winning satire Jojo RabbitThor: Love and Thunder and the upcoming sports biopic dramedy Next Goal Wins starring Michael Fassbender (Dark Phoenix), Elisabeth Moss (The Invisible Man) and Darby, while Clement has been busy helping write the series adaptation of Shadows on FX, with Flight of the Conchords‘ Paul Simms acting as showrunner, and starring in the long-developed Avatar sequels.

The two reprised their film roles alongside Jonathan Brugh for the FX series, but Darby discussed that given his pack’s home being based in New Zealand, he doesn’t see him reprising his role of Anton, but offered that if Clement found a way to bring him across the pond, he would be interested in returning to the werewolf world.

What We Do in the Shadows is based on the 2014 vampire mockumentary film of the same name which follows a group of vampires (Taika Waititi, Clement, Jonathan Brugh, Ben Fransham) who live together in modern-day Wellington, New Zealand as they go through the mundane tasks of everyday life and of rooming with other people, as well as bringing in a vampire (Cori Gonzalez-Macuer) just turned by the group.

The series is written and executive-produced by Waititi and Clement. It stars Matt Berry (The IT Crowd), Kayvan Novak (Early Man), Natasia Demetriou (Year Friends) and Harvey Guillen (The Magicians).

Season 2 will also be featuring Star Wars alum Mark Hamill, who is the latest big name that is set to make an appearance in the series with the first season featuring guest-stars that included Dave Bautista, Evan Rachel Wood, Danny Trejo, Wesley Snipes, Paul Rubens, and Tilda Swinton, who all played vampire roles.

The film earned rave reviews from critics upon release and quickly became an international cult classic, propelling Waititi and Clement even further into the spotlight as actors, writers, and directors. Since its release, the film has had multiple continuations in development, with a sequel set on the group of werewolves seen in the film led by Anton (Rhys Darby, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) still in active development, as well as a procedural comedy series based on the cops seen in the film as they encounter paranormal events around Wellington.

The 10-episode season 2 is scheduled to premiere on April 15 on FX and the next day on Hulu. The premiere will include the first two episodes, followed by a new episode each subsequent week.

Jumanji: The Next Level is available on digital platforms now and is set to hit shelves on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD on March 17!
