Some celebrities are putting their money where it counts, advocating for Australian wildlife and raising awareness of the devastating bushfires on the continent. From Kylie Jenner to Ellen DeGeneres to Selena Gomez, here are a few of the celebrities raising awareness (and funds) for the Australian bushfires.

Australian bushfires are threatening wildlife and homes in the area

This fire season in Australia proves to be more catastrophic than in past years. According to CNN, about 2,700 firefighters were battling the blazes as of Sunday and three have been confirmed dead. Some of the wildlife, including the already endangered Koala species, has been forced out of their habitats.

As a result, some celebrities used their Golden Globes speeches to highlight climate change and the Australian bushfires. Others took to social media, sharing information about non-profit organizations involved with the crisis.

Some celebrities took it upon themselves to spread awareness of the bushfires in Australia. That includes acceptance speeches at the Golden Globes made by actresses like Laura Dern, and messages on Twitter from Selena Gomez, Charli XCX, and P!nk.

“Absolutely devastated by the fires in Australia. Praying for everyone affected and all of the first responders. I’m making a donation and would love if you would consider doing the same if you can. Swipe up,” Selena Gomez tweeted.

“It’s almost impossible to understand the size and destruction of the fires in Australia. Here are three organizations I’ve already donated to. I hope you’ll donate, too,” Ellen wrote on Twitter. She shared the Twitter accounts of The NSW Rural Fire Service, The Australian Red Cross, and WIRES.

Some fans criticized Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner for their contradictory posts about the Australian wildfires

As some of the world’s richest “self-made” women, according to Forbes, Kim Kardashian, and Kylie Jenner both spread awareness of the climate crisis on social media. Some fans pointed at private jets and Kylie Jenner’s fur slippers, arguing that these celebrities don’t do enough to support the environment.

“Nothing gets me more heated than to see people think they know what we donated to and to think we have to publicize everything,” Kim Kardashian tweeted in response to criticism from a fan. Their tweet has since been deleted, but some Twitter users continued to judge Kim Kardashian’s actions.

“[Okay] but didn’t you publicize you and Kanye renting out a Boeing 747 commercial airplane last year? No amount of charitable donation or trees any person or organization could plant cancel out those carbon emissions,” one Twitter user said.
