Staying inside during the COVID-19 pandemic means that many of us are working on projects at home or binge-watching movies and TV shows. That goes for some of your favorite Hollywood directors, writers, and producers who are doing the same thing.

Taika Waititi is having watch parties on social media and answering fan questions, letting us know he’s working on Thor: Love and Thunder. James Gunn is connecting with fans too, giving everyone small hints about what to expect with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.

As we sit home watching or re-watching some hits in the Marvel canon, there is ample time to theorize on what’s next, and thanks to Gunn, we know at the very least, there will be death in the next Guardians film.

Gunn’s kept the project under wraps but confirmed one detail

By now, the MCU fandom knows how this goes. Leaks, teases, and secrecy is the name of the game when it comes to new films, but if someone from the inside drops a crumb, we’re on it. That’s what happened on Instagram this weekend when Gunn started answering rapid fire fan questions.

Comicbook.com caught wind of a simple exchange on Gunn’s Instagram stories: “Will someone die in gotg3” and his reply, “Yes.” Boom.

Now, this may sound too broad to take and run with, but where’s the fun in believing that “yes” applies to the general population of characters in Guardians of the Galaxy? Naturally, fans are speculating this means a major hero will bite the dust.

Fans guess which Guardian will lose

For months, some Marvel fans have been arguing that Bradley Cooper’s Rocket Raccoon will be meeting his maker. This rumor is starting to gain traction due to his backstory not being explored in the franchise.

Redditors point out that Drax, Groot, and Gamora have already died in some form, and Star-Lord had an entire film centered on his life. It’s Rocket’s turn.

In February, ScreenRant reported that Gunn confirmed Vol. 3 will wrap up storylines from Vol. 1, and as far as a timeline, the events of Endgame have already taken place.

Moviegoers don’t expect Gamora or Drax to die twice. The thought of Rocket dying is making everyone sad, and production on the film hasn’t even begun.

There won’t be another sequel

If you pay attention, you’ll see that Gunn’s Instagram is chock-full of intel for his upcoming projects. He’s also open to casual Q&A sessions with comic lovers – both Marvel and DC.

Another fan asked about a Guardians of the Galaxy part 4, and Gunn was clear that he has no plans to continue to the story.

He said that his intention with the franchise was to keep it a trilogy, and that’s where things will end. Gunn is writing and directing the final movie, and now that filming is wrapped for DCEU’s The Suicide Squad, his attention can turn toward Guardians.

Marvel’s shifting of its Phase 4 and 5 rollouts could mean fans won’t see the movie until sometime in 2022 or 2023, but keep an eye on Gunn’s social media accounts for more news.
