Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made headlines when they decided to step back from royal duties. The royals made the announcement on Jan. 8, but two months later, people are still talking about ‘Mexit,’ as Kelly Clarkson calls it. David Spade, of “Weekend Update”’s Hollywood Minute, The Showbiz Show and now Lights Out with David Spade had some thoughts too.

Spade joined comedians Ron Funches and Fortune Feimster on The Kelly Clarkson show on March 13. In a clip the show released March 16, the comedians joke about the couple’s departure from royal duties. Clarkson is shutting down tapings until further notice as a precautionary measure due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) so these may be some of the last celebrity interviews she does for a while!

David Spade believes reality set in for Meghan Markle

What often happens with marriages is that couples get so infatuated with the process of getting married and the wedding itself that it can be a let down when reality sets in. For most couples, reality is just a day to day home life with work and family responsibilities. For a royal, married life included serious responsibilities.

“I feel like she gets swept off her feet like the dream,” Spade said. “She goes over to England and she has this crazy wedding and she’s literally royalty but then it gets a little mundane and she’s like, ‘All right, let’s head back to L.A. I’ve got to go to my Cold Reading class on Pico again and just get back into acting.’ I think the fun part was over and now she sort of got a little board.”

David Spade thinks it shouldn’t be so easy for Meghan Markle to ‘Mexit’

Spade was a little disappointed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex got such an easy out. He thought the Royal Family should hold Markle to her commitment to become a duchess when she married Prince Harry.

“It’s not that easy,” Spade said. “You don’t just get to get out of it now. I think it’s odd that they let them scram. I have some hot takes, I have opinions.”

Spade also joked that perhaps Buckingham Palace was too big for Markle. He imitated her apartment hunting. “I was just looking. There’s a two bedroom condo over in Toluca Lake.”

Are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle the Kardashians of England?

Funches joked that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are famous for the same reason the Kardashians are: because of their last names. Spade jumped on Funches’ joke too.

“They’re stepping on the Kardashians of being famous for doing nothing,” Spade said. “The Kardashians are mad. They don’t want ‘em here.”

David Spade has one more joke about Prince Harry

Spade and the other comedians riffed for two solid minutes and Markle was not the only butt of their jokes. Prince Harry took his fair share too. Spade compared him to another famous Prince who didn’t want to be known as royalty anymore.

“I heard Harry wants to be known as the artist formerly known as Prince,” Spade joked. “That’s a good one. That’s a good one, guys.”
