Tom Hanks’ Box Office History—Where Does ‘Toy Story 4’ Land?

Following
This article is more than 4 years old.

Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks has had a practically unparalleled career at the box office. From blockbusters to award winners to bona fide classics, he's seemingly done every kind of movie—and they've all made money. He has over 20 movies that have earned at least $200 million at the worldwide box office.

So as Toy Story 4's earnings near $520 million, you might be wondering, “Is this going to be Tom Hanks' most successful film of all time?”

It might be—but it’s got some heavy competition. Plus, when we adjust for ticket price inflation, we can gain a better idea of what films were truly the most "successful."

So let’s take a look.

An Overview

Let’s start with some perspective. Tom Hanks has starred in a whopping 49 films since his debut in Splash in 1984. In total, his films have grossed $4.86 billion domestically, with an opening weekend average of $22.5 million and an overall average of $99.3 million. When adjusted for inflation, his total rises to $8.02 billion and his average to $163.6 million.

Internationally, his films have grossed $9.8 billion (unadjusted).

Where 'Toy Story 4' Lands

Toy Story 4 opened with a $120.9 million weekend domestically and $123.6 million overseas, bringing the worldwide opening weekend total to $244.5 million.

As of now, between June 21 and July 3, it has grossed $256.8 million in the U.S. and $263 million in foreign markets, bringing Toy Story 4's grand total in its first 10 days to $519.8 million.

When looking at Hanks' entire catalog, without adjusting for inflation, Toy Story 4 currently ranks in the #3 spot domestically and the #4 spot worldwide. When adjusted for ticket prices in the U.S., it sinks to 11th place.

The Juggernauts

Alongside all four of the Toy Story films—which all rank near the top of Hanks' list—there are four films that tower above the rest of his catalog.

First, the Toy Story films. Obviously their box office feat is practically unmatched, as the series could be the highest-earning animated franchise ever. Those films have made a combined $1.11 billion domestically and $2.49 billion worldwide—and that's only including Toy Story 4's first 12 days in theaters.

The next four films are Forrest Gump, Cast Away, The Da Vinci Code and Saving Private Ryan. All four have raked in over $200 million domestically and over $400 globally.

The Rankings

Considering Toy Story 4 had the biggest opening weekend of Hanks' entire career, it's more than likely that the film tops his unadjusted rankings within a few months.

Here’s a list of his top 15 films domestically:

  1. Toy Story 3 ($415 million)
  2. Forrest Gump ($330.3 million)
  3. Toy Story 4 ($256.8 million)
  4. Toy Story 2 ($245.9 million)
  5. Cast Away ($233.6 million)
  6. The Da Vinci Code ($217.5 million)
  7. Saving Private Ryan ($217 million)
  8. Toy Story ($191.8 million)
  9. The Polar Express ($187.2 million)
  10. Apollo 13 ($173.8 million)
  11. Catch Me If You Can ($164.6 million)
  12. The Green Mile ($136.8 million)
  13. Angels & Demons ($133.4 million)
  14. Sleepless in Seattle ($126.8 million)
  15. Sully ($125.1 million)

Then, here are Hanks' top 15 films worldwide. As you'll see, the rankings shift:

  1. Toy Story 3 ($1.07 billion)
  2. The Da Vinci Code ($758.2 million)
  3. Forrest Gump ($677.4 million)
  4. Toy Story 4 ($519.8 million)
  5. Toy Story 2 ($497.4 million)
  6. Angels & Demons ($485.9 million)
  7. Saving Private Ryan ($481.8 million)
  8. Cast Away ($429.6 million)
  9. Toy Story ($373.6 million)
  10. Apollo 13 ($353.5 million)
  11. Catch Me If You Can ($352.1 million)
  12. The Polar Express ($286.9 million)
  13. The Green Mile ($286.8 million)
  14. You've Got Mail ($250.8 million)
  15. Sully ($240.8 million)

Those numbers are impressive—however, being ranked in 11th place for the adjusted prices, Toy Story 4 still has to pass many of Hanks' biggest hits in the U.S.

Here are his top 15 films and their adjusted domestic earnings:

  1. Forrest Gump ($708.3 million)
  2. Toy Story 3 ($480.6 million)
  3. Toy Story 2 ($431 million)
  4. Saving Private Ryan ($412.7 million)
  5. Toy Story ($395.3 million)
  6. Cast Away ($377.5 million)
  7. Apollo 13 ($359.1 million)
  8. The Da Vinci Code ($299.2 million)
  9. Sleepless in Seattle ($275.8 million)
  10. The Polar Express ($267.1 million)
  11. Toy Story 4 ($256.8 million)
  12. Big ($252.3 million)
  13. Catch Me If You Can ($247 million)
  14. The Green Mile ($235.3 million)
  15. A League of Their Own ($233.5 million)

At this point, only time can tell where Toy Story 4 will land—but it doesn't seem likely it will top Forrest Gump. Even catching Toy Story 2 & 3 will be difficult.

Regardless, it’s clear Toy Story 4 will become one of Tom Hanks' top-grossing movies.
