• Little Women director Greta Gerwig called Cardi B an “inspiration” to her during her pregnancy while on a visit to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
  • “I was pregnant and no one knew, and I would go home at night and watch Cardi B’s Instagram videos about her pregnancy—and they were incredible,” explained Gerwig.

While Greta Gerwig was filming her adaption of Little Women and simultaneously hiding her pregnancy, she turned to an unexpected source of inspiration to keep her sane throughout the process: downtime with Cardi B’s Instagram.

During her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon over the weekend, the director hilariously explained how she found Cardi B’s signature Instagram venting sessions on the trials of pregnancy to be a respite from having to keep hers under wraps during Little Women’s production.

“I was pregnant and no one knew, and I would go home at night and watch Cardi B’s Instagram videos about her pregnancy—and they were incredible,” said Gerwig. “I was like, ‘She’s AMAZING! She’s making music videos and complaining about things! She’s wonderful!’”

The director said the “Bodak Yellow” rapper was “a huge inspiration” to her while she was pregnant, noting that she and Cardi B both made the decision to keep their pregnancies quiet for as long as possible.

“I would go home and go, ‘Ugh, everybody thinks I’m so chubby’, but secretly I’m pregnant,’” laughed the director.

Gerwig also mentioned Cardi's influence on her experience of motherhood in a recent interview. “[Cardi would] do videos about how her hair looked better, but then she was mad because she had terrible heartburn,” explained Gerwig. “Everything. I would eat it up. I’ve just been very moved by women who’ve claimed all of it.”
