Lucifer‘s farewell tour won’t happen all at once: The upcoming fifth and final season of Netflix‘s supernatural drama will be split into two parts.
Series star Tom Ellis revealed the news during — of all things — a set visit that aired on daytime TV’s The Kelly Clarkson Show. “Season 5 of Lucifer is going to be split into two halves,” Ellis told Clarkson, who’s a confessed Lucifer super fan. “Netflix is going to drop eight episodes, and then there’s going to be a little break, and then they’re going to drop another eight episodes.” (EW.com first reported the news.)
Splitting seasons into two halves has become a go-to move for Netflix, with recent seasons of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Fuller House and BoJack Horseman all rolling out in two separate parts. Back in July, TVLine reported that Lucifer‘s final season would be expanded to a total of 16 episodes.
We still don’t have a premiere date for Lucifer‘s first batch of Season 5 episodes yet, but to refresh your memory: Season 4 ended with — SPOILER ALERT — Lucifer making a major sacrifice by leaving Earth’s surface to return to and serve as king of Hell, lest the demons there continue to be restless and attempt escape. Of course, his difficult decision came on the heels of him revealing “the full Devil” to Chloe, who not only accepted it but uttered, “I love you” for the first time. Luci in turn acknowledged that the prophecy was wrong in that his “first love” was never Eve, but the detective.

I hate it when they do this. Anyone know why they do it? Is it just a marketing move? They get two news/review cycles out of a single production season… why not just break it up into multiple seasons? I know that’s just a perception issue, but it’s a real thing. Waiting for the second half a season just feels very different from waiting for the next season, and with shortened 8-13 episode seasons becoming more common, I don’t know why they don’t just do that. But they’re the experts, I guess. They know what works best for their algorithms. Not a big deal; just kind of annoying.
Actors get pay rises by seasons.
A split was to be expected with a 16 episode season. I don’t think any American live action Netflix show has had more than 13 episodes released at once.
ScyFy or however they spell it now and USA used to do this for years but in a slightly different way. I actually liked it. Half during the fall/winter and half during the spring/summer. That way you got less uninterrupted new episodes, mini season finales, and less wait time between seasons. I miss it.

That said, Netflix will probably wait like a year in between the two parts which sucks. That’s not how it should be done.
I’m happy that we’ll get to see it sooner as it would’ve been a long wait for them to fully produce all 16. That’s the downside of the all at once/binge release – they have to finish the last episode before we can even see the first.
I still haven’t watch S4
Since it was just 10 episodes, fans can look at this as seasons 5 and 6. They’ll likely get to see the next 8 sooner since they won’t have to wait until all 16 are in the can. This is a win/win.
Was this even in question? I believe Arrested Development’s fourth season with 15 episodes was the most they’ve ever put out of an original scripted show all at once. Everything with 16 or more has always been split in multiple parts.
i am an older fan of the show. what upsets me more than anything is with my age will i still be here to see the second half of the season. think about that Netflix
I’m still relatively young, but this is an unfortunately real thing that I have to think about too – which sounds trivial and silly, I know I have much worse problems than worrying about living long enough to see the ends of my favorite shows – but it’s one of those odd situations that just makes me really sad when I have to stop and seriously consider the possibility of not making it there.
That’s exactly how I thought when I was waiting for Infinity War and Endgame. An odd anxiety to have but something I seriously consider.
As much as I enjoyed Kelly and her family fawning all over the cast and set, I’d have loved it if she’d interviewed them more……if we’d got to hear the cast more.
Instead of slpitting the seasons just give them a season 6
It will better for me if they split it. I was worried they release all 16 eps at once, people will binge it in on day and then spoil it to me because I can’t watch that many at once. But with 8 eps I can finish in two days at that long I can stay away from spoilers, hopefully
Stupid
I honestly don’t know why Netflix keeps cancelling ratings explosive shows! This show is so full of heart and soul. It’s very deep with a twist of sin that it keeps us guessing. It keeps us wanting more. The following alone should be enough for Netflix to keep it going. But alas, we are not that lucky.
Would like Season 5 of Lucifer split only if it’s not very long between the 2 parts.
Might as well add 4 more episodes and call them seasons 5 and 6. Maybe this allows them time to see if 5 was just as big a hit as 4 and they renew for another season.
