Daniel Kaluuya went to a lot of parties when he was nominated for an Oscar for the satirical race sensation Get Out in 2017. That is how the awards system works. The big stars are paraded until one person wins most of the statuettes and four bored rivals end up with an empty mantelpiece. In Kaluuya’s year, Gary Oldman and his Winston Churchill karaoke took home the key gongs, leaving the young British actor with a few smaller accolades and the not inconsiderable sympathy prize of a Hollywood career.

Looking back, was the canapé scoffing and small talk at all fun? “No,” Kaluuya says, slumped in a booth in an upmarket Manhattan restaurant, dressed head to toe in sportswear, cap high up on his head.
