The 92nd Annual Academy Awards were held on Feb. 9, 2020 in Hollywood. All of the stars of the best films of the years were there, from Brad Pitt to Laura Dern. However, while those two walked away with big awards, not everyone was so lucky. Here are the nominees who won the red carpet, even though they didn’t win at the ceremony.
Scarlett Johansson
Actress Scarlett Johansson has, like many high-profile celebrities, attended the Oscars before. However, this year was her first time as a nominee. And not only that, but she achieved special status as a double-acting nominee, for her supporting role in Jojo Rabbit and her leading one in Marriage Story.
Johansson walked the carpet in a shimmery strapless gown, complete with a partially see-through bodice and a train. She attended the awards ceremony with her fiancé, Saturday Night Live writer and star Colin Jost. Though Johansson didn’t take home either award she was up for, Jojo Rabbit did score the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar.
Cynthia Erivo
Like Johansson, British actress Cynthia Erivo lost to Renée Zellweger for the Best Actress In A Leading Role Academy Award. Had she won, Erivo would have joined a very exclusive club: That of EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) winners. She was nominated for portraying Harriet Tubman in Harriet.
Though she didn’t win, Erivo still had an incredible night. She performed her Oscar-nominated song from the film, “Stand Up.” And she won the red carpet, wearing a white gown with an asymmetrical strap, encrusted gems, and a high slit. Not only did she wow us with this look, but she took it a step further with her gold performance dress and her blue and purple after party number.
Saoirse Ronan
Irish actress Saoirse Ronan is still quite young. But she’s no stranger to the Oscars. She’s been nominated an impressive four times, for her performances in Atonement, Brooklyn, Lady Bird, and now, Little Women. Though she didn’t take home the coveted award in 2020, she certainly caught everyone’s eyes before the ceremony.
Though it’s a bit unique, Ronan’s color-blocked dress with the black-and-white peplum top and pale purple skirt was an exciting and bold choice. What’s more, the gown had an important message: It was made in effort to support sustainability, as the top half was crafted from her 2020 BAFTA dress.
Florence Pugh
Unlike many other red carpets, the Oscars brings with it an extra level of prestige. Because of this, there are often few bright colors in the mix. But Florence Pugh, who was nominated for her supporting role in Little Women, was the exception to the rule this year.
Attending for the first time, the English actress wore a turquoise dress, which had skinny straps and was belted at the waist. The skirt was tiered and cut in a high-low style, and she wore matching heels. Pugh completed her simple yet elegant look with gorgeous pendant necklace. Her after party look was flashier, but equally as fun.
