Well, it’s almost June, and we’re all still stuck inside. The silver lining: that gives us more time to stream movies. And, as always, Netflix is adding some new titles for the upcoming month. These are best TV shows and movies coming to Netflix in June 2020.
The Silence of the Lambs
Jonathan Demme‘s The Silence of the Lambs somehow gets better and better every time I watch it. Demme’s use of point of view shots are disarming while also drawing us fully into the world of rookie FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster), who is tasked with interviewing cannibal serial killer Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins). Hopkins and Foster both scored Oscars for this, and the movie also picked up Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay, making it only the third film in movie history with such a sweep (It Happened One Night (1934) and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) are the other two).
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
There’s a reason E.T. is such a beloved classic: it’s just as wonderful now as it was when it arrived in 1982. Steven Spielberg‘s emotional tale of a lonely young kid who befriends an alien packs such a punch because Spielberg doesn’t dumb down the kids, nor does he try to portray them as mini-adults. They’re just normal kids, dealing with an abnormal situation. And the bow on this package is John Williams‘ powerful score, which absolutely will make you cry, unless you’re some sort of heartless monster.
Zodiac
Is David Fincher‘s Zodiac a perfect movie? I think it is, but you’re welcome to disagree. For my money, though, this is Fincher firing on all cylinders, taking what could’ve been a straightforward serial killer movie and turning it into a story about obsession. Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, and Robert Downey Jr. all turn in great performances as three very different guys – a cartoonist, a cop, and a reporter – who are all involved with the hunt for the Zodiac Killer in some way.
Starship Troopers
The only good bug is a dead bug in violent, funny, and highly satirical sci-fi epic. Trounced by critics who clearly didn’t get it at first, Starship Troopers has gained a much-deserved cult following for its mockery of right-wing militarism and the glorification of war. As bug-like aliens invade Earth, it’s up to a rag-tag bunch of very horny 20-somethings to save the day, all guided by the steady hand of director Paul Verhoeven.
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
Walk Hard was a box office bomb, and we’ve suffered for that ever since. If this film – which so perfectly sends-up the creatively bankrupt musician biopic subgenre – had been a hit we probably would’ve been spared years of crappy rock star biopics that all follow the same dumb formula. There wouldn’t be a Bohemian Rhapsody, that’s for damn sure.
