Kanye West has been a controversial artist since his rise to fame in the 2000s. Although many people applaud him for being a representation for African Americans in the overwhelmingly white music industry, a number of fans are also concerned about West potentially being sexist.
Throughout the years, West has done a lot of things that leave a bad taste in people’s mouths. Here are the reasons why fans believe that West oozes of sexism with some of his behavior.
Kanye West tries to control Kim Kardashian’s image
West has been criticized recently for being “controlling” towards his wife, Kim Kardashian, especially when it comes to her image.
When West and Kardashian first started dating, West insisted on throwing away most of the clothes she owned and replacing them with things that he approved of. Although Kardashian seems to look back on this situation positively and even saying that he is her “go-to stylist,” many fans still think it is bizarre that West would do such a thing to an adult partner.
These days, West is very devoted to Christianity, and he seems to want Kardashian to change her image again. On an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians a few months ago, West told Kardashian that she should dress more conservatively, saying: “You are my wife and it affects me when pictures are too sexy.”
Kanye West seems to focus a lot on Kim Kardashian’s physical beauty
It’s clear that West cares a lot about Kardashian’s physical appearance. While it is normal to pay attention to how your spouse looks, the way West behaves makes fans believe that he does not see Kardashian as anything other than an eye-candy that he can have in his arm.
For example, his lyrics about her often talk about her as a trophy that he has won. He also seems to pit her against other women, who he calls “hoes.”
Kanye West has taken digs at his ex-girlfriend Amber Rose
West has also had a history of not being very nice to his ex-girlfriend Amber Rose. The two of them were together for a couple of years in the late 2000s, but after they split up, there were a lot of shades thrown by both sides.
In 2015, West made some very mean comments about Amber Rose, saying: “If Kim had dated me when I first wanted to be with her, there wouldn’t be an Amber Rose. It’s very hard for a woman to wanna be with someone that’s with Amber Rose. I had to take 30 showers before I got with Kim.”
In West’s song “30 Hours,” he also rapped: “My ex says she gave me the best years of her life, I saw a recent picture of her I guess she was right.”
Kanye West subjected Taylor Swift to his sexist behavior
Aside from feuding with Rose, West is also known for not getting along with Taylor Swift. Their beef started in 2009 at the Video Music Awards when West interrupted Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video.
In his 2016 release, “Famous,” West talked about the incident. He said: “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous.” West claimed that Swift approved of the lyrics, but Swift’s spokesperson insisted that she did not approve of anything that had such a “strong misogynistic message.”
In any case, West went even further when he released the music video for the track, which included a naked look-like figure of Swift in bed next to West.
Kanye West supports men who have been accused of sexual misconduct
Furthermore, a sign for many fans that West is sexist lies in the fact that he has shown support for infamous men who have been accused of sexual misconduct.
In 2016, he tweeted: “BILL COSBY INNOCENT !!!!!!!!!!” and sparked a lot of outrage on the internet. Cosby was accused of sexually accusing over 50 women, and people believe that West’s tweet is saying that the rapper does not believe these accusations.
West has also famously aligned himself with Donald Trump, who has not exactly been an icon for gender equality. Trump has been accused by multiple people of sexual assault, and the president even nominated Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court despite Kavanaugh himself facing sexual assault allegations as well.
