The year of 2017 has arrived at an end and I must say, our Nigerian actors/actresses represented exceptionally well in the movie industry. Today, I’ll be setting aside time to review the best Nigerian movies of 2017 (Nollywood cinema) that got everyone talking.
It’s been a year set apart by memorable division and epic storylines in Nollywood, and a bigger number of stories of an ambushing quality than any measure of 2016’s best. With social change springing up in everything quite a while ago bloodied field of growth to them and it’s a great thing to know there’s improvement in the Nigerian film industry.

- 1. Omugwo
Omotunde, A young civil engineer married to Raymond an OAP (Online Radio Personality), has just given birth. Coloured by their different cultural backgrounds, their mothers-in-law forcefully move in with the couple to perform the Igbo child care rite called, Omugwo. But instead of relieving their children of the burden of childcare, the mothers’ rivalry complicates life for the couple to comical effects.

Everyone in the Osayande family worries about Isoken. Although she has what appears to have a perfect life – beautiful, successful and surrounded by great family and friends – Isoken is still unmarried at 34 which, in a culture obsessed with marriage, is serious cause for concern. Things come to a head at her youngest sister’s wedding when her overbearing mother thrusts her into an orchestrated matchmaking with the ultimate Edo man, Osaze. Osaze is handsome, successful and from a good family, making him perfect Nigerian husband material. But in an unexpected turn of events, Isoken meets Kevin who she finds herself falling in love with and he just might be what she truly wants in a partner. The only problem is, not only is he not an Edo man, he is Oyinbo (Caucasian). Isoken is a romantic dramedy that explores cultural expectations, racial stereotypes and the bonds that unite families in touching dramatic and comedic ways. It features Funke Akindele, Dakore Akande, Damilola Adegbite, Marc Rhys and Patrick Doyle.

A potpourri of love, drama, passion and culture, “10 Days in Sun City” is a comedy-drama that sees Akpos on another ‘adventure’, this time, to South Africa, with his girlfriend Bianca. Actually, this movie made me laughed out so loud when I watched it but there’s a cool meaning to it even as it’s comic. Be aware that “10 Days in Sun City” is the third-highest-grossing Nigerian film by the domestic gross of ₦177,000,000. It features Ayo Makun, Adesua Etomi, Richard Mofe-Damijo, 2baba and more.

Slow Country is about a homeless teenage mother, armed with her desperate ‘mother instinct’ to provide a safe haven for her son, got herself trapped in prostitution and drug trafficking. Trouble, however, erupts the moment she decides to turn a new leaf and quit. Alas, her boss, a ruthless human and a notorious drug trafficking won’t let her loose off his leash. It features Majid Michel, Ivie Okujaye and Tope Tedela.

A man meets God when he is in an accident and is informed he is going to die. He begs for God to give him a chance to find his soulmate before going to heaven. It’s an ideal fit for this list.

Hakkunde is an intriguing story of a young graduate who battles everything (including love, family, discrimination, drug abuse, culture, tradition and self) on his journey to self-discovery and actualization.

Mentally is the story of a young Nigerian man, Akin, who despite his mother’s warnings, decides to relocate to Lagos where his only friend, Emeka (a former schoolmate) promises him enormous opportunities of having a better life. His first experience in Lagos takes him on a journey unprecedented, but eventually an eye-opener that makes him re-evaluate the choice he just made. This movie featured Adekunle Gold and Frank Donga and was directed by James Abinibi.
