SP Bright Edafe
The spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, has issued a warning to parents who try to hide cases of defilement.
Through a social media post, he emphasized that concealing such cases is a criminal act and individuals caught doing so will be prosecuted.
He also emphasized that those caught engaging in sexual activities with children below 13 years old would face life imprisonment as per the law.
He mentioned,
“Sexual intercourse with a child below 13 years is considered defilement, and if convicted, the punishment is life imprisonment according to Section 218 CC. Consent is irrelevant in such cases and the offenses cannot be settled privately. Therefore, attempting to cover up defilement could result in charges of aiding and abetting for parents.”
The Nigerian Criminal Code stipulates that any individual who unlawfully engages in sexual activities with a child under 13 years old commits a felony and may face life imprisonment, with or without corporal punishment.
