Rishi Sunak, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, has resigned from his position as the Conservative Party leader.
Sunak made this announcement during a speech at Downing Street, which SaharaReporters observed on Friday morning.
His decision came after his party’s disappointing performance in the recent nationwide election held on Thursday.
He stated, “I will be meeting with the Majesty to tender my resignation (as prime minister). To the nation, I offer my sincerest apologies.
“I have dedicated myself completely to this role. However, your message is clear that a change in the United Kingdom government is necessary and your judgment is paramount.
“I have listened to your frustrations, your dismay, and I take full responsibility for this defeat. To all the Conservative candidates, to the hard-working campaigners who gave their all without success, I regret that we could not meet the expectations of your efforts.
“In light of this outcome, I will step down as the party leader not immediately, but we will make arrangements for my successor. After 14 years in power, it is imperative for the Conservative Party to regroup and fulfill our vital opposition roles professionally and efficiently.”
Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, is poised to become the first Labour prime minister in 14 years.
He has promised that his administration will prioritize “nation over party.”
Starmer affirmed, “This mandate comes with significant responsibility.”
He emphasized that his government will concentrate on “national revival,” with the objective of revitalizing and fortifying the United Kingdom across various sectors.
“We need to restore politics to its original purpose of serving the public.”
“We have succeeded,” Starmer proudly proclaimed to his supporters at London’s Tate Modern museum.
