Ini Ememobong, the Commissioner for Special Duties and the Ibom Deep Sea Port in Akwa Ibom State, has stepped down from Governor Umo Eno’s administration following the governor’s recent switch from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
As previously reported, Governor Eno made his move to the APC public during a formal event held on Friday, June 6, at the Government House’s Banquet Hall in Uyo, signaling a significant political change in the region.
The event saw the presence of several notable APC figures, including Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Cross River Governor Bassey Otu, Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo, and Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, spouse of the Senate President.
“After thorough consultations as your elected representative, I have decided to transition to the APC,” declared Governor Eno during the gathering.
Before his announcement, the governor had notified all appointed officials who were not interested in joining the APC to resign.
In light of this, Ememobong submitted his resignation, expressing that he couldn’t in good faith follow the governor to the ruling party.
In a widely shared resignation letter, Ememobong stated, “Consequently, based on my personal belief, I will be unable to join the All Progressives Congress. Thus, I respectfully resign from my position as Honourable Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Sea Port and as a member of the State Executive Council.
“Today, I have submitted my resignation to the Governor in line with his request for appointees unwilling to accompany him to the APC to step down.
“While I hold no objection to the Governor’s personal choice, I cannot partake in that journey. My decision stems from my commitment to principled politics and my longstanding opposition to that political party.”
Ememobong, who was formerly the Commissioner for Information under past Governor Udom Emmanuel, is known as one of the prominent figures within the PDP in Akwa Ibom.
