Nigeria experienced a nationwide blackout as the national grid suffered another system collapse on Saturday.
Emeka Ezeh, the Head of Corporate Communications at Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, made the announcement on Saturday.
The National Grid Collapse occurred around 15:09 hours on Saturday, disrupting bulk electricity supply from the Transmission Company of Nigeria National Control Centre.
As a result, power supply was lost in the Southeast states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo.
“This has led to the current power outage experienced across the network.
“As a result, all our TCN stations are without power, and we are unable to serve our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states.
“We are awaiting further information on the cause of the collapse and restoration of power supply from the National Control Centre (NCC), Osogbo,” the notice stated.
This incident follows TCN’s recent announcement that electricity generation dropped to 4,723.30 megawatts peak on July 4, 2024, from 4800mw in May.
In 2024 alone, Nigeria has witnessed three system collapses, with a total of 227 collapses over the past 14 years, according to TCN records.
These challenges come amidst the electricity tariff increase on April 3 and July 1, 2024, affecting Band A customers who are supposed to receive 20-24 hours of power supply.
The electricity tariff for Band A customers surged to N206.80 per kilowatt-hour from N66 kWh.
