Imagine this: President Joe Biden, following a disastrous debate performance in Atlanta, decides to step down by mid-July. What follows is a “blitz primary” – a fast-paced political showdown where individuals like Taylor Swift and Oprah Winfrey could potentially enter the race. Yes, the same Swift known for her record-breaking achievements and Oprah, the iconic TV personality, might just be contenders for the highest office in the nation.
The memo stresses the urgency of the situation, stating, “We can either stumble towards a shameful, avoidable defeat of democracy,” or “Democrats can turn this moment into Our Finest Hour.” Brooks and Dintersmith propose weekly forums akin to a political Coachella, featuring Michelle Obama, Taylor Swift, and Oprah as distinguished moderators. Candidates would showcase their platforms before delegates, who would then select their favorite through ranked-choice voting, all leading up to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on August 19.
However, the plot twist lies in President Biden’s apparent lack of interest in stepping down, despite the mounting pressure and elaborate strategic plan resembling a movie script. With just under four months until the November 5 general election, he remains active on the campaign trail, engaging with voters as if it were still 2020.
