At this stage, it is increasingly likely that the once-envisioned fairytale union of Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck has reached its end. The celebrity couple exchanged vows in Las Vegas back in 2022, but the persistent discord — notably exemplified by Affleck’s acquisition of a lavish $20 million estate in Los Angeles — seems to be steering them towards a definitive divorce.
The official uncoupling of Lopez and Affleck is anticipated to be a prolonged process. Their intricate shared history alongside potential legal entanglements surrounding their marriage render the prospect of a divorce as an impending arduous endeavor.
Navigating the “prenup predicament”
In a recent discussion with legal expert Vanessa Lloyd Platt, it was revealed to Newsweek that the significant disparity in wealth between Lopez and Affleck has the potential to significantly impact JLo in the event of a divorce. This issue can be traced back to an alleged prenuptial agreement that was in place when the couple was first engaged in 2002.
“It is now speculated that after encountering obstacles during their initial engagement, the couple possibly did not enact a prenuptial agreement this time around,” Platt disclosed. “Jennifer Lopez’s estimated fortune of approximately $400 million compared to Ben Affleck’s $150 million could conceivably be in jeopardy.”
Upon learning of Affleck’s recent property acquisition, Lopez purportedly felt disheartened, interpreting it as the closing chapter of a union that, while not safeguarded by a standard prenuptial agreement, did entail certain limitations.
Platt suggested that a potential resolution to Affleck and Lopez’s situation could involve the implementation of a post-nuptial agreement aimed at preserving the vast fortunes of both celebrities. Given the brevity of their marriage, both Lopez and Affleck are likely inclined to uphold their opulent lifestyles as closely as possible.
“Whether the couple opts for divorce proceedings or opts for a post-nuptial agreement to shield their assets and pave the way for the future of their relationship remains uncertain,” Platt concluded.
