Remembering Professor Vo Tong Xuan: A Leader in Agriculture

Professor Vo Tong Xuan, renowned agricultural expert, passes away

On August 19th, Professor Vo Tong Xuan passed away in a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, as confirmed by officials of Nam Can Tho University.

Professor Vo Tong Xuan, a distinguished agricultural expert, served as the Honorary Rector of Nam Can Tho University and was a revered figure in the field of agriculture and education.

Born in 1940 in Ba Chuc Commune, Tri Ton District, An Giang Province, Professor Vo Tong Xuan was a pioneering force in the development of high-quality rice varieties in the Mekong Delta, earning him the title of the “father” of many rice strains in the region.

After completing his studies abroad in the Philippines and Japan, Professor Vo Tong Xuan returned to Vietnam in 1971, driven by a passion for science and a dedication to contributing to his homeland.

Throughout his career, he made significant contributions to agricultural education, authored numerous publications, and introduced new rice varieties that became staples in the Mekong Delta provinces.

Professor Vo Tong Xuan’s legacy extends beyond his academic achievements; he also played a crucial role in the establishment of the Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute and made notable contributions to the field of agronomy.

Recognized for his outstanding contributions, Professor Vo Tong Xuan was honored with titles such as Hero of Labor and served as a National Assembly delegate in addition to various leadership roles in universities.

Plans are underway for his funeral in Ho Chi Minh City, followed by his burial in his hometown as a final tribute to his remarkable life and career.
