Teachers at government primary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have initiated an indefinite strike.
This action follows a 14-day notice given by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT Chapter, to the six area councils in the region.
On September 18, students arriving at school were sent home immediately at the gate.
The NUT Chairman in Kubwa, Comrade Ameh Baba, confirmed the situation and mentioned that a resolution was made prior to the strike’s commencement.
The primary purpose of the strike is to urge the six area councils to fulfill their commitment to pay 60 percent of the outstanding minimum wage arrears.
Comrade Ameh also criticized the councils for failing to implement a 40 percent peculiar allowance for teachers, as well as neglected increments of 25 percent and 35 percent in teachers’ salaries.
He emphasized the importance of primary education, stating it should be treated with the highest priority as it forms the foundation of education.
The union has warned, “The strike that began today is only the start. If there is no government response within a week, we will picket the area councils’ secretariats.”
“This will also include protests and support from secondary school teachers down the line. For now, it may impact the incoming JSS 1 students, as their results are expected to be released soon,” he added.
