The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) conducted raids at private hostels in Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, leading to the detention of multiple students.
As reported by SaharaReporters, the operation took place early on Saturday in the Kwakwalawa and Gidan Yaro neighborhoods, where numerous students were apprehended.
Witnesses recounted that EFCC agents entered their hostels around 4 a.m., making arbitrary arrests of the students.
The anti-corruption agency has not yet released a statement regarding this recent operation and the detentions of the students.
Earlier this year, in February, SaharaReporters also covered a similar incident where several students from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) were taken into custody during a midnight raid on off-campus hostels.
Reports indicated that the EFCC operatives arrived at student residences around Orita Obele and Road block at approximately 2 a.m. They forcibly entered the rooms and detained students.
Many students initially mistook the officials for kidnappers until they realized they were members of the EFCC later on during the event.
Those involved were reportedly from the commission’s Benin Zonal office.
“There was not only property damage, but many students were physically attacked, including female students.”
“Locations such as Adonai lodge, Celebrity lodge, and Peace Apartment in Orita Obele were affected. More details will follow,” a source informed SaharaReporters.
