Eight Arrested in Imo for Arson at NOUN University and Former Senator Frank Ibezim’s Residence (Video)

The Imo state police have detained eight individuals linked to a recent arson incident at the National Open University (NOUN) located in Ezeoke Nsu, Ehime Mbano.

These individuals are also suspected of vandalizing the property of Senator Frank Ibezim, a former representative of Okigwe South, on September 30, 2024, around 9 PM.

The incidents happened shortly after there were allegations that Ibezim was involved in setting up an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at the NOUN campus for newcomers from Northern Nigeria.

This rumor triggered protests from some community members.

Ibezim clarified in a statement that these claims are untrue, asserting: “I want to strongly emphasize that there are no plans to accommodate IDPs, refugees, or migrants at the National Open University Centre, Nsu, Ehime Mbano LGA. Such assertions are entirely false. I will not endorse any initiative like that. Instead, we aim to provide skills training for the vulnerable youth of the South East.”

On October 2, ASP Henry Okoye, the spokesperson for the Imo state police command, confirmed the arrests and indicated that further inquiries are ongoing.
