Barcelona may soon acquire a new striker, potentially fulfilling a key need for the team. Recent reports suggest that the club is in a strong position to sign Jonathan David, the Lille forward who made headlines with a decisive goal against Real Madrid in the Champions League recently.
The Canadian star has demonstrated impressive form this season, netting eight goals so far for Lille. Barcelona appears to be eager to bring him to Camp Nou in time for the 2025-26 season.
Is David the successor to Lewandowski?
Despite Robert Lewandowski still being a prolific scorer, registering nine goals this season, he is set to turn 37 next year.
Barcelona is actively seeking a long-term forward to succeed him, and David, now 24, looks like an ideal candidate. He has accumulated 92 career goals and could potentially make a move on a free transfer if Lille does not manage to renew his contract before June 2025.
Given the club’s financial challenges, they view David as an affordable yet valuable option. They can pursue a pre-contract agreement in January, although they will face stiff competition from prestigious Premier League clubs such as Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester United.
Reports indicate that Lille is still attempting to convince David to commit to a new contract, but it seems increasingly probable that he will seek a new adventure in 2025.

His recent goal against Real Madrid marked his fourth in just 10 Champions League matches, while he has also performed well in Ligue 1, tallying 76 goals and 11 assists across 152 appearances for Lille.
