The upcoming Club World Cup will be held in the United States in 2025, marking the inaugural tournament under FIFA’s new expanded format for clubs.
Manchester City currently hold the title, having won in 2023 in Saudi Arabia. This tournament included the champions from each of FIFA’s six confederations and the host team, Al Ittihad.
The 2025 edition will feature a total of 32 teams, following FIFA’s decision to reform the tournament to parallel the World Cup for national teams.
Despite concerns about the crowded football schedule and the increased burden on top players, the event has generated excitement. Notably, Lionel Messi of Inter Miami is expected to face some familiar adversaries as his team serves as the host.
2025 FIFA Club World Cup Details
The tournament is set to unfold during the summer of 2025, commencing with group matches on June 15, 2025. Inter Miami will kick off the event at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
The competition will extend through July, with the top two teams from each of the eight groups advancing to the knockout rounds, culminating in the final on July 13, 2025, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Participating Teams for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup
A total of 32 teams will be organized into four pots for the draw set for December 2024, utilizing a format reminiscent of the UEFA Champions League before its recent adjustments.
Each continental champion from the qualifying cycle will gain a spot automatically, while others will be determined based on performance in continental championships.
Europe has the most representation with 12 teams, followed by South America with six. Asia, Africa, and North America will each contribute four teams, while Auckland City from Oceania and Inter Miami will complete the roster.
While each confederation champion has free entry, no more than two teams from the same country can qualify. Brazil leads with four teams as Fluminense, Botafogo, Palmeiras, and Flamengo all claimed the Copa Libertadores during the qualifying cycle. In contrast, only Chelsea and Manchester City will represent England due to UEFA rank restrictions based on their Champions League victories.
Pot one includes the highest-ranked clubs from Europe and South America; pots two and three will feature additional European teams and champions from other regions, while pot four includes Inter Miami and other clubs.
