Bruno Fernandes, the captain of Manchester United, has suggested a potential successor for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
Guardiola’s contract with the club is set to expire at the conclusion of the 2024/25 season, and the manager has not yet confirmed whether he will extend his stay.
At the age of 53, Guardiola has successfully led City to four consecutive Premier League titles but remains silent regarding his future while the club deals with 115 charges related to alleged financial misconduct.
Though Guardiola asserts that the outcome of this significant case won’t affect his decisions, Manchester City is reportedly exploring coaching candidates beyond 2025.
In the midst of ongoing discussions about Erik ten Hag’s status at Manchester United, Fernandes hinted at the prospect of his former coach at Sporting CP, Ruben Amorim, as a frontrunner for the managerial role at City, especially following Hugo Viana’s transition to City’s director of football.
“Since Mr. Amorim took charge at Sporting, they have become one of the most entertaining teams,” Fernandes shared during an interview with CNN Portugal.
“They show remarkable consistency, their signings have been astute, and the team is in a strong position right now. It’s a well-arranged squad.”
“Regarding Amorim, his readiness is evident. Managing Sporting and winning titles is a formidable task, as the club had a 20-year championship drought. Since his arrival, he has secured two titles, which attests to his impressive work.”
“If he were to achieve similar success in England, Spain, or elsewhere… it’s uncertain until you try, but his capabilities are clear for all to see.”
Amorim was previously linked to a managerial position at Liverpool last summer before Arne Slot took over the club.
Currently, Amorim’s contract in Lisbon extends until 2026, which means Manchester City would need to pay a fee to terminate his contract in Portugal.
