A New Dawn: England Chooses Tuchel, Easing Pressure on Ten Hag

Reprieve for Erik ten Hag as Manchester United

Some speculated that the recent international break in October could spell the end for Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

However, after discussions among the club’s leadership, it was decided that Ten Hag would remain in his position, particularly after developments regarding another prominent managerial role in football.

The Times reported on Tuesday that Thomas Tuchel, who has managed Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich, has reached an agreement with the Football Association to succeed Gareth Southgate as England’s manager.

From Manchester United’s perspective, there was a noteworthy detail in the Times’ article regarding Tuchel’s discussions with the club prior to Ten Hag’s contract extension. Tuchel remained a point of interest for United’s football operations team, which includes CEO Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth, and technical director Jason Wilcox.

During the summer, United explored the possibility of hiring Tuchel before opting to extend Ten Hag’s deal, but they maintained an interest in him. Recently, Tuchel was informed that he would be the top choice if a coaching change became necessary.

Manchester United’s performance this season has not met expectations, currently sitting in 14th place in the Premier League following disappointing home losses to Liverpool and Tottenham. Additionally, their two recent draws in the UEFA Europa League mean Ten Hag has managed to secure just one victory in his last 10 European matches.

If a mid-season dismissal were to occur, it would require having an alternative plan in place. According to the report from the Times, Tuchel could have been that plan. While there may be other candidates available, it’s difficult to find another manager with Tuchel’s level of experience and success currently out of a job.

The uncertainty surrounding United’s situation is undesirable at this stage of the season. Tuchel’s decision to take the England position may ultimately provide Ten Hag with additional time and opportunity that he needs to turn things around.
