Farewell to a Southern Gem: Michael Kelcourse of Southern Charm Passes Away at 70

Southern Charm Star, Beloved Butler Michael Kelcourse, Dead At 70

The passing of Michael Kelcourse, a cherished figure from “Southern Charm,” has saddened many fans. He died at 70 on October 22, as reported by his friend Luzanne Otte on his CaringBridge page. His death was linked to complications from a spinal cord stroke he suffered in 2021, along with another stroke in early October. Otte noted that, despite ongoing health struggles, Michael remained upbeat until he entered hospice care in June, even amidst the challenges posed by osteomyelitis.

Patricia Altschul, a key figure in “Southern Charm,” confirmed the news of his death on Instagram, expressing profound sadness over losing their beloved Michael. She reflected on their two-decade relationship and highlighted his role not just as a butler but as a cherished family member. Many fans adored Michael for his humor and kindness, which made him a standout character on the show. He was moved by the outpouring of support from fans in his final weeks.

Michael first charmed audiences in Season 1 as Altschul’s refined butler. Unfortunately, due to his ongoing health issues, he never made a full recovery from his spinal injury, and his last appearance was a brief cameo in Season 9.

Michael Kelcourse’s Prolonged Health Struggles

Michael’s health struggles began in February 2021, when he was hospitalized after suffering a spinal cord stroke. Whitney Sudler-Smith, Patricia Altschul’s son, updated fans on his condition, expressing hope for recovery with the aid of talented doctors from the Shepherd Center in Atlanta. A year later, Altschul shared a positive update about Michael moving to a supportive living facility in Florida, where he would be closer to family.

Regrettably, in September, Luzanne Otte signaled that Michael’s health was deteriorating. She spoke of how he was grateful for the love surrounding him as he faced the end of his life. Altschul later revealed that Michael had experienced another stroke on October 7, reminding fans of his upcoming birthday on October 13 and encouraging them to send him cards. Michael Kelcourse will undoubtedly be remembered fondly by many.
