Jimmy Kimmel attempted to use humor amidst the troubling reactions to Donald Trump’s recent election victory, which has left many considering the implications of Kamala Harris’ loss.
The Republican party shocked the nation by winning decisively not just in the popular vote and the electoral college, but also in critical swing states, raising concerns regarding their policies that many view as threatening women’s rights, the economy, and press freedom.
Amid ongoing concerns, the 56-year-old host sought to inject some humor into the atmosphere by making a playful request to the 78-year-old Trump.
“My one request to President-elect Trump,” he shared during his live show, “is to allow me to share a prison cell with Taylor Swift.
“I’m quite skilled at making bracelets, and I’m sure we’d get along well. It’ll be interesting to see how amusing that is in six months, when all the great talk show host investigations begin.”
Kimmel’s Stark Warning
Kimmel further compared the billionaire to Emperor Palpatine from the Star Wars saga, an evil tyrant who unleashes darkness across the galaxy until heroes like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader (and eventually Rey Skywalker and Ben Solo) confront him.
On a more serious note, he voiced a dire perspective on the implications of a Republican administration that holds sway over the House of Representatives, Senate, and Supreme Court.
“Last night was dreadful. It was a devastating night for women, children, and the many hardworking immigrants sustaining this nation,” noted Kimmel. “It spells trouble for healthcare, our environment, science, journalism, justice, and free speech.
“It was a bleak night for the underprivileged, the middle class, seniors relying on social security, our allies in Ukraine, NATO, the truth, democracy, and decency. This was a grim night for all who opposed him.
“And believe it or not, it wasn’t a good night for those who supported him either; they just haven’t grasped that reality yet.”
