On Thursday evening, a Police Inspector was tragically shot by armed assailants in Cross River.
The incident occurred at a quarry site where the gunmen not only took the Inspector’s life but also stole his AK-47 rifle, marked Breech No. BE-35-298.
According to a statement from SP Nelson Okpabi, the Police PRO of Zone Six, the attackers also kidnapped two Chinese nationals and one Nigerian at the Marksino quarry camp in Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State.
Reports state that AIG Jonathan Towuru, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone Six, has launched a manhunt for the suspects, who were reportedly dressed in military uniforms when they attacked the site around 5:20 PM.
Okpabi revealed that the intruders accessed the quarry due to a lapse in security caused by a civilian worker at the gate. He noted that the AIG has instructed the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Zonal Criminal Investigation Department, to head to the location immediately. Efforts are underway to capture the criminals, ensure the safe return of the victims, and hold those responsible accountable.
“The AIG extends his condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased inspector.
“He is committed to continuing the pursuit of justice until the victims are found safe and those responsible are apprehended,” he added.
