House Committee Screens Acting Chief of Army Staff for Confirmation
The House of Representatives Defence Committee conducted a screening of Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, the acting Chief of Army Staff, on Wednesday in Abuja to consider his confirmation.
Committee Chairman Rep. Benson Babajimi (APC-Lagos) stated that this screening is a constitutional responsibility of the house.
He emphasized the importance of prioritizing proactive measures for national security in response to the ongoing insecurity in Nigeria.
According to Babajimi, the nation faces a wide range of security challenges such as insurgency, banditry, communal violence, and cyber threats.
He noted that the Nigerian Armed Forces have been actively engaged for over ten years, conducting various operations and supporting internal security measures.
“While we acknowledge the notable achievements in recent times, it is evident that further efforts are necessary to secure long-lasting peace across the country,” he remarked.
He pointed out that the changing landscape of global security necessitates innovative strategies, as threats now extend beyond conventional battlefields to include cyberspace and economic aspects.
“In this context, we must adopt a forward-thinking approach to national defense, ensuring our military is equipped and prepared to tackle both traditional and emerging threats,” he added.
Babajimi mentioned that the committee’s role is to not only evaluate Lt.-Gen. Oluyede’s qualifications and strategic vision but also to create a collaborative framework for addressing Nigeria’s security issues.
He reaffirmed the House’s commitment to legislative support and oversight of the Armed Forces in their security endeavors.
“We will consistently advocate for proper funding, provide essential legal frameworks, and oversee the use of resources to maintain accountability in military actions,” he stated.
Turning to the nominee, Babajimi emphasized the significant responsibilities that accompany the role of Chief of Army Staff, advocating for integrity and professionalism in protecting lives and property.
“If confirmed, you will need to enhance collaboration among security agencies, emphasize troop welfare, and uphold the trust of the Nigerian populace,” he added.
The chairman assured that the committee would pose questions that reflect national and constituent concerns, urging the nominee to provide detailed and honest answers to facilitate discussions.
In his response, Oluyede committed to fostering peace across the nation if confirmed in his role.
He expressed the need for collective efforts from all Nigerians to tackle the current security challenges.
Oluyede advocated for strong partnerships with neighboring countries and greater collaboration among different security agencies.
“I feel privileged to be considered for this important role and look forward to working alongside the National Assembly and other stakeholders to bring enduring peace to our nation,” he said.
He also noted that he appeared for confirmation as the 24th Chief of Army Staff following the passing of Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.
Having served in the Nigerian Army for over 30 years, he believes his experiences have equipped him well for the upcoming responsibilities.
“This nomination presents me with an excellent opportunity to implement positive changes in the Nigerian Army, enabling it to fulfill its constitutional obligations effectively,” Oluyede stated.
He reiterated that national security is a collective responsibility requiring unity and collaboration among all Nigerians and their security partners.
