Anambra Government Halts Awka Solar Street Lighting Initiative Due to Escalating Expenses

Anambra Govt Suspends Awka Solar Street Light Project Over High (via Primetweets)
Following in-depth discussions, Dr. Law Mefor, the Commissioner for Information, indicated that the council deemed the cost per unit of the project excessive and determined that adjustments were required.

The Anambra State government has put a halt to the installation of solar street lights in the Awka area.

This initiative was expected to cost the state over N1 billion.

The suspension was discussed during the 35th meeting of the Anambra State Executive Council, which took place at the Government House in Awka.

At the meeting last week, three companies were identified as the beneficiaries of the contract, with an expected completion timeframe of three months.

However, Dr. Law Mefor explained that after a thorough review, the council determined that the cost per unit of the project was too high, necessitating a reassessment.

“The council thoroughly examined the proposal for the solar-powered street lights and concluded that the unit cost needs to be reduced,”
Mefor said.

It was also mentioned that the proposal will be revisited in the upcoming Executive Council meeting, where detailed specifications for the project will be presented. “This decision is a responsible approach to ensure the project is carried out at a reasonable cost,” the council pointed out.

Furthermore, the Executive Council clarified that earlier communications about the awarding of the street light project were erroneous. “The government apologizes for the confusion. We will keep the public informed about the project’s progress once a decision is finalized,” the statement concluded.
