Authorities in Nigeria have reported that a tragic stampede took place in Okija, Anambra State, resulting in multiple fatalities during a rice distribution event.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, December 21, 2024, left over 100 people—including men, women, and pregnant women—crushed as they attempted to receive their portion of Obijason rice being distributed in the area.
A witness, who recorded a video at Our Lady’s Hospital in Okija, showed the aftermath, revealing numerous deceased individuals.
In the viral footage, the male narrator expressed his shock, stating, “This incident took place in Okija just now. Look at the people who died while trying to collect Obijason rice. We are at Our Lady’s now.”
“People came to share Obijason rice and were trampled to death. Just look at all of them, including women. They are all lifeless. They came for Obijason rice.
“More bodies are still being brought in. This tragedy occurred this morning, on December 21, and it’s truly horrifying. Even pregnant women are among the victims.”
“More bodies are arriving; this is Okija. We are in Our Lady’s. These are not just people who fainted; more and more are coming in. Reports suggest that over 100 people have died. A terrible tragedy has occurred.”

Two individuals from Awka, the state capital, confirmed to SaharaReporters that the stampede occurred that Saturday morning.
One local from Okija noted that he had been in contact with people back home, who corroborated the occurrence, but he hadn’t verified the total number of victims yet.
He remarked, “An event of this magnitude occurred and is still being assessed. I’m from Okija, and my initial calls have confirmed a tragedy of serious proportions.”
Upon inquiry, Anambra State Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, verified the incident, stating that some individuals had indeed lost their lives during the stampede.
He elaborated, “Police personnel have arrived at the scene in Okija, where the alleged stampede took place early on December 21, resulting in fatalities.”
“Initial reports indicate that a community philanthropist was distributing palliative support when the situation spiraled out of control, leading to the stampede.”
“Before the event could commence, a significant crowd surged into the area, causing the tragedy. While details regarding the victims remain sparse, police are investigating the matter further. Updates will be provided as they become available.”
