Concerns Over Peter Obi’s Commitment to the Labour Party

During a recent interview, Doyin Okupe, the former Director-General of Peter Obi’s presidential campaign and a notable figure in the Labour Party, suggested that Obi may leave the party.

Defections Linked to Party Structure Issues

Okupe attributed the recent departures from the Labour Party to its failure to establish a stable structure following the 2023 elections. He shared these insights with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday.

Recently, six members of the Labour Party in the House of Representatives switched their allegiance to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), highlighting the ongoing political shifts.

Reasons Behind the Departures

The defectors included Representative Tochukwu Chinedu Okere from Imo, Donatus Matthew from Kaduna, Akiba Bassey from Cross River, and Esosa Iyawe from Edo.

Okupe remarked that it was anticipated that elected officials would not remain in a party that lacks clear prospects for their futures, emphasizing that those choosing to leave are motivated by political survival.

Historical Context of the Labour Party

“The Labour Party has traditionally been a refuge for those who couldn’t secure nominations in larger parties,” he explained. “The presence of prominent figures can enhance a party’s standing, but what was largely overlooked was developing a robust political infrastructure,” he added.

Future Implications and Changes

According to Okupe, many politicians elected under the Labour Party banner recognize the urgency to align with larger parties for greater relevance. “They understand that their current position is precarious and need to act accordingly,” he stated.

Peter Obi’s Potential Shift

He also noted the likelihood that Peter Obi may consider leaving the Labour Party, given his recent interactions with other opposition leaders. “Obi’s recent meetings, particularly with Atiku Abubakar, indicate that he is keeping his options open,” Okupe remarked, signaling changing political dynamics within the Labour Party.

In summary, the struggle to maintain party unity and structure within the Labour Party poses significant challenges as key figures contemplate their political futures.
