In a pre-match briefing, Coach Kim Sang Sik highlighted Vietnam’s preparedness for their encounter with Singapore, a team recognized for its effective pressing and swift counterattacks.
“We’re excited to be here and ready for the challenge ahead. Singapore is a formidable side with skillful players like Shawal Anuar, who is known for his speed on counterattacks. We’ve thoroughly examined their strategies and are aware of their attacking potential,” Coach Kim stated.
He expressed concern over the injury of Van Toan, calling it a notable setback but reassured that they have a replacement ready to step in.
Trust in the squad
Kim Sang Sik has high hopes for forward Nguyen Xuan Son, who shone in Vietnam’s recent 5-0 win over Myanmar, scoring and assisting in multiple goals.
“Xuan Son has captured the interest of both fans and media. While this can add pressure, I believe in his capacity to handle it. Our team is cohesive and eager to compete in the semi-final,” Kim remarked.
He also reiterated his ambition to secure the championship, saying, “This is my inaugural major tournament with Vietnam, and I aspire to bring back the glory of 2018 by lifting the ASEAN Cup trophy in 2024.”
Challenges in Singapore
Vietnam faces the challenge of only being allowed 70 supporters in the host nation, yet Kim recognized the unwavering backing of fans from afar as a vital source of motivation for the team.
“Even with a limited crowd, we will perform to honor those cheering for us from home. The affection and support from our fans drive us to achieve victory,” he stated.
Midfielder Nguyen Hoang Duc emphasized the team’s successful adaptation to Singapore’s rainy weather and artificial turf during their training, ensuring they are well-prepared for the match.
Path to triumph for Vietnam
With an unbeaten record of three wins and one draw, Vietnam made it to the semi-finals. The emergence of Xuan Son had a transformative impact on their gameplay, raising hopes for continued success.
Coach Kim’s main challenge now is to lessen the team’s reliance on Xuan Son. Though teams like Singapore are aware of this, effectively neutralizing him on game day is another challenge.
“Vietnam needs to emphasize team strength and tactical discipline. If every player performs optimally within the team’s structure, we can tackle any rival, including Singapore,” Kim highlighted.
The first leg of the semi-final against Singapore is set to begin at 8 p.m. on December 26.
