Leaked messages reveal that Drake invoked LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers as he discussed the intricacies of his lawsuit against Universal Music Group, which relates to his conflict with Kendrick Lamar.
In the revealed conversations, the Canadian rapper compares his situation to a hypothetical where Nike accuses LeBron of being unfaithful to his wife, Savannah, as he elaborates on his ongoing legal battle with UMG.
The rapper, aged 38, is accusing UMG of defamation since they failed to prevent Lamar from releasing “Not Like Us,” which contains allegations of him being a sexual predator and pedophile, as a follow-up claim to “Meet the Grahams.”
According to the alleged conversation attributed to Drake, he states: “My ordeal with Universal is similar to if Nike were promoting the idea of LeBron cheating on his wife.” He believes previous artists who criticized the label were dismissed as eccentric and did not face consequences for their actions.
Understanding Drake’s LeBron Reference
Drake further alleges that UMG made payments to iHeartRadio as part of a scheme to enhance the visibility of “Not Like Us,” along with improperly boosting the track’s presence on Spotify.
UMG has denied these claims and has been Drake’s record label for his entire career prior to this dispute, explaining his reference to James.
LeBron, who has enjoyed an enduring partnership with Nike since 2003, has significantly benefited from this collaboration, bolstering his status as a billionaire. There are no indications of him being unfaithful to his wife, Savannah, whom he wed in 2013.
