In prior years, the anthem was often sung by university bands, choirs, and even orchestras, including the Washington National Symphony Orchestra, which performed during the third Super Bowl held at the Orange Bowl in Miami back in 1969.
Iconic performers like Diana Ross, Neil Diamond, Billy Joel, Natalie Cole, Cher, the Backstreet Boys, Beyonce, Carrie Underwood, Alicia Keys, and Lady Gaga have also delivered memorable renditions of the anthem.
However, none rival the emotional impact of Super Bowl XXV in 1991, when Whitney Houston delivered an unforgettable performance that resonated across the nation, coinciding with the U.S. entering the Gulf War against Iraq.
Accompanied by the Florida Orchestra, Houston’s rendition remains unmatched in its beauty and significance.
