Revelation: Marlon Brando’s View on Clint Eastwood

Recalling the evening when Marlon Brando picked him up from a lavish rooftop restaurant at the L’Ermitage luxury hotel in Los Angeles before inviting him to his Mulholland Drive residence, Eddie Murphy delves into their discussions about life and the craft of acting. Amidst their conversation in 1982, a time when Murphy was just embarking on his journey to stardom as a comedian, Murphy was surprised by Brando’s evident disdain for Clint Eastwood. Eddie vividly remembers Brando’s unapologetic statements and his critical stance towards the art of acting.

Sharing the encounter, Murphy recounted: “This is how long ago it was: He was going, ‘I can’t stand that kid with the gun.’ I was like, ‘What kid with the gun?’ He said, ‘He’s on the poster!’ I was like, ‘Clint Eastwood?’ ‘Yeah, that guy!’ He was referring to Clint Eastwood as ‘that kid.’ On that particular night, he picked me up from the hotel, albeit after a minor timing mishap where Eddie kept him waiting in the car. Their discussion at Brando’s residence primarily revolved around ‘The Godfather,’ with Brando making bold statements denouncing acting as a meaningless skill that anyone could master. Murphy reflected on being in the company of renowned individuals he once admired, pondering the surreal experience of sharing a meal with the greatest actor of all time. Eddie remarked, “The greatest actor of all time wants to have dinner with you!” showcasing his humble perspective amidst such grand encounters.
